Smallwander.com – the concept
Smallwander.com features great small towns that have fewer than 10,000 people that are walkable, historic, and charming, and that have a good concentration of locally-owned merchants downtown. Although we have been focused on towns in the southeast until now, we are now ready to add towns from across the nation.
Member towns enjoy the benefit of being a part of a network that values all that is unique and authentic in these vibrant communities. Travelers to one of our member towns enjoy the same quality of experience at any other of our member towns.
Tourism 2.0
As web communication tools have become more available and affordable, smallwander.com serves as a focal point for discussions about these wonderful communities. Discussions include how to cross-promote with other like-minded small towns to increase visitors, and how to engage the traveling population to hear more about what they would like to see.
Member towns
If a town meets the criteria, the town’s attractions, merchants, restaurants, accommodations, and events are featured on smallwander.com. In return, a town representative pays a yearly membership fee of $120. Town representatives can take many forms. They are often Main Street managers, downtown merchant associations, and local tourist officers, for example.
Be a Smallwander.com ambassador
Since it’s a large country and we can’t possibly know of all the great towns out there, we’ve decided to bring you in on the action.
Do you know of a fantastic small town that you think meets the smallwander.com criteria?
Do you want to make some cash?
Here’s what you can do:
- Refer smallwander.com to a town representative, that, again, might include a Main Street manager, downtown development/merchant association, or a local tourist office.
- If the town representative contacts us, tells us who referred them, and, the town meets our criteria, we’ll feature the town on the site for $100 per year, paid by the rep, and turn around and pay you $10.
- There is no limit to how many towns you can bring to us.
Or, if you happen to be one of those town representatives and you come to us without us having to hunt you down, we’ll feature your town for 20% off ($100 per year), if we like your town.

[...] August 29, 2008 I have a wonderful treat for you this Friday - SmallWander.com. They have such a cool idea! They are compiling a list of great small towns in the US with the idea that a lot of people are interested in small town tourism. You know – people who live in larger cities might like to get a taste of small town life for a break. They’ve started with a focus on North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia, and they plan to eventually provide information nationwide. Do you know of a great small town (”fewer than 10,000 people that have smalltown charm, are walkable and have historic, artistic, and natural offerings“)? Tell them about it! [...]

I am the Executive Director for Johnston County Tourism, and found your website on WUNC radio station web….
Benson is a town I would recommend for your site. Benson is a town of 3,600 people with a thriving downtown retail center, with the Singing Grove located on Main Street, the Benson Museum of Local History and a wonderful wedding destination and bed & breakfast, Preston Woodall House. The homes on Main Street and the historic district are lovely and the town continues to invest in the future of the downtown with streetscape projects, lights on the trees and events year round.
Thanks for your consideration.

Completely agree that Little Switzerland, NC should be considered by you guys! Great, unique, eclectic small town in the mountains of NC!
Also, don’t miss looking at Bakersville, NC http://www.bakersville.com and Spruce Pine, NC http://www.sprucepinefestivals.com. Two great small towns with populations MUCH less than 10,000 located in the beautiful mountains of NC. Bakersville is the home to the NC Rhododendron Festival celebrating Roan Mountain the largest rhododendron garden in the world! And Spruce Pine is Home of the Perfect Christmas Tree with a quaint downtown featuring a park, river, train station and two levels of locally owned shops!
Thanks for considering these towns and especially thanks for this forum to promote small towns! They are indeed a treasure!

I live in a unique small town called Laurens, South Carolina, which was featured on Town Haul for a make-over a couple of years ago. I serve on the Chamber of Commerce board and its recreation and tourism committee. I will tell our Main Street USA director about your website in hopes that Laurens can be one of your small towns! Thanks.

Look forward to hearing from the MS director, Peggy! We’ll check out Laurens in the mean time.

I would like to have our town on your website. It is in Central Massachusetts. In 2010, we and five surrounding towns will be spending a year celebrating our joint 350th anniversary. We have a lot offer anytime, but this is the heart of New England and have in our history numerous famous people and events, including a hair-raising attack by Indians in 1675. The town was burned, and 100 residents sere besieged in one small building for three days. Events are scheduled weekly for the year 2010, beginning with a grand ball on January 2, and the big 3-day hoopla in September. The three day reenactment of a famous baseball game in June, and wonderful places to eat, fun things to do, and we welcome visitors. The area is filled with attractions, including the famous Brimfield flea market and Ols sturbride Village. I may be contacted at ntiques@aol.com
